Wangala Festival
Wangala is a post-harvest festival celebrated by the Garo tribe of Nagaland. In this festival,
they give thanks to “misi Saljong” (Also known as pattigipa), the sun God of fertility, for

Wangala is a post-harvest festival celebrated by the Garo tribe of Nagaland. In this festival,
they give thanks to “misi Saljong” (Also known as pattigipa), the sun God of fertility, for
blessing the people with a rich harvest. Wangala is celebrated in the month of November 21st
every year as allotted by the Government of Nagaland different villages coming together in
one venue. Wangala is celebrated for two to three days or more, where various fan favorites
such as sports, food, art and culture are hosted, though recently it has been celebrated for one
day in an attempt to conserve the ancient heritage of the Garo tribe and to expose the younger
generation to their roots

Activities
- During Wangala, young and old dress in their colourful garments
(Dakmanda or Gando) and feathered head gear (Do’me) and dance to music played on long, oval shaped drums (Dama).

Garo people are dependent on agro economy and do not use any
agricultural products before thanking God of fertility, Misi-Saljong. People celebrate this festival with dancing, drinking Chu (Rice beer fermented for seven years) and singing.
In thisfestival various traditional dances such as wangala dance, rugala are performed by different villages

Indigenous games competition such as Budu Sala (Tug of War), Ro’ong dea (stone lifting), Makal pala (wrestling), wapong sika (Bamboo pole pushing) etc. are also organized.

Rugala (the pouring of rice beer) and Cha’chat so’a (incense burning) are performed on the first day by the priest, who is also known as “kamal”. These rituals are performed inside the house of the Nokma (chieftain) which is followed by beating of rang (traditional gong) dances and merry making.
