Activities
The Ratha Yatra typically follows a set schedule of activities. It commences with the Netra Utsav on the day of Ashadha Krushna Amabasya, which is a ritual awakening of the deities. This is followed by Uvayatra, taking place on Ashadha Shukla Pratipada, where the deities are prepared for the journey. On Ashadha Shukla Dwitiya, the Pahandi or the ceremonial procession takes place, where the deities are transferred to the chariots. This procession is especially significant at the Gundicha temple in Puri. The actual pulling of the chariots occurs on Ashadha Trutiya and Chaturthi, where thousands of devotees come together to pull the beautifully adorned chariots of Lord Jagannath, Devi Subhadra, and Lord Balabhadra. The Bahuda Yatra and another Pahandi occur on Ashadha Shukla Ekadashi. During Bahuda Yatra, the deities make their return journey. Finally, the pulling of the Bahuda chariots takes place on Ashadha Dwadashi and Trayodasi. These rituals mark the completion of the Ratha Yatra, symbolizing the deities' journey back to their main abode in the Jagannath Temple.
