Meaning and Etymology:The word "Nuakhai" comes from two Odia words:"Nua" (ନୂଆ), which means "new," and"Khai" (ଖାଇ), which means "food" or "eating."Together, "Nuakhai" signifies "eating the new crop," symbolizing the first consumption of the newly harvested grains, especially rice, which is the staple food of the region. This new harvest is offered first to the deities before it is consumed by the community.

The nabanna will be offered to Maa Samaleswari during the Lagna.People offer the 'Nabanna' to the deity amidst 'Hulahuli', the beating of drums, cymbals, and sounds of conch shells.After having 'Nabanna' bhog, people seek blessings from elders in the family and locality and the practice is called 'Nuakhai Juhar' in local parlance. People also exchange greetings which is called 'Nuakhai Bhetghat'.
