Punitha Melnaariyappanoor Church, Kallakurichi
The Melnaariyappanoor Church is located in the
town of Chinna Salem in the Kallakurichi District. This 100-year-old church was
built by Kunchaan, an ardent devotee of St. Anthoniar. Every year, the church
hosts a 9-day festival in the month of June to honour the life and work of St.
Anthoniar.
History and Significance
St. Anthoniar, often referred to as the “Saint of Miracles," was born
in Lisbon, Portugal into a wealthy family. He took the vows of the priesthood
after meeting five Franciscan saints. During his lifetime, he exhibited various
miracles and was profoundly known as the “Wonder worker to the Almighty.”
Devotees also believe that worshipping St. Anthoniar will aid them in
leading a peaceful marriage life.
St. Anthony's Church Feast
The Melnaariyappanoor Church organises a 9-day
series of festivities to honour his life with a display of devotees walking in
groups, singing about his life’s miraculous work. Also, the church hosts
various prayer meetings, in which devotees light candles and place them in
front of St. Anthoniar’s statue.
On June 13th, the Saint's idol is placed on a holy
car that has been exquisitely decorated and is carried in a procession while
thousands of followers sing praises to him.
