Galdan Namchot is a festival most often celebrated in Mongolia, Tibet and many regions of Himalaya and particularly in Ladakh. Galdan Namchot is a festival most often celebrated in Mongolia, Tibet and many regions of Himalaya and particularly in Ladakh. It commemorates the birth & parinirvana (death) of Je Tsongkhapa, a renowned scholar of Tibetan Buddhism who palyed an important role in the formation of the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism. Namchod heralds the beginning of the New Year celebrations, which continue through the festival of Losar and conclude with that of Leh Dosmodhe. During the festival, it is customary to prepare various varieties of the traditional Ladakhi fare called "Thukpa" in every home, to be served to visiting friends and relatives.

Galdan Namchot Festival marks sthe beginning of the New Year in LadakhSpecial Highlights of the Festival:Celebrations during the Galdan Namchot Festival are held on a grand scale. Monasteries & residential buildings are illuminated, whicl people light butter lamps symbolising the illumination of the light of wisdom and removal of darkness of ignorance. During this occasion, several dishes like Butter Tea, Momos & Thukpa are prepared and rituals and prayers are performed by monks dressed in colourful robes
