Elk Hill, one of Ooty's most picturesque hills, is home to the Elk Hill Murugan Temple. The legendary warrior god Lord Muruga, also celebrated as the "Tamil God," is the presiding deity of this temple. Every visitor will be in awe of the temple's expansive valley panorama. Every year, during the Tamil calendar month of Thai (in between January and February), the temple hosts the “Thaipoosam Thiruvizha”.
The presiding deity, Lord Murugan is sculpted in a holy idol of 40 feet reclined in a standing posture at a open space as a replica of the Batu Caves Murugan Temple in Malaysia. During the Thai Poosam festival the devotees perform a unique dancing style known as Kavadi Attam, which involves carrying a wooden arc structure covered in peacock feathers. The pilgrims carry "Paal Kudam" ,brass pots, which are filled with milk to offer Lord Murugan. To participate in this celebration, people visit the temple from all around the nation.
