Bodhgaya in Bihar, where Lord Buddha is claimed to have
acquired enlightenment beneath a banyan tree, hosts one of the most energetic
festivities. Bright lights and floral decorations illuminate the well-known
Mahabodhi Temple, which houses a tree that has grown from the original banyan
tree and invites devotees, pilgrims, and tourists from all over the world. The
Uttar Pradesh town of Sarnath, which is close to Varanasi, also lights up for
this festival because it was there that Lord Buddha preached his first sermon
to his followers. A sizable fair is held here to commemorate the occasion, and
the lord's artefacts are brought out to be displayed on caparisoned elephants.
