Bihu is the national festival of Assam. Bihu is a festival celebrated by all people regardless of caste and race. Bihu is mainly an agricultural festival. The Assamese New Year begins on the first day of Bohag. There are Three main agricultural festivals: at the beginning of the crop, during the growing season and at the end of the harvest. There are Three Bihu celebrated in Assam : Bohag Bihu or Rangali Bihu, Kati Bihu or Kangali Bihu, and Magh Bihu or Bhogali Bihu.
Bohag Bihu is celebrated for seven days starting from Chat Sankranti and continuing for six days of Bohag. Each day has a different name. They are Garu Bihu, Manuh Bihu, Gosai Bihu, Tatar Bihu, Nangal Bihu, Jiyari or Chenehi Bihu and Chera Bihu.These seven Bihus are known as the seven Bihus of Assamese.
Goru Bihu or Cow Bihu
There are many different types of cows, including cows that are considered to be the 'Go-Lakshmi' in the Assamese society Before bathing, a 'chat' made of garlic, eggplant, garlic, turmeric, carrots, etc. is thrown on the body saying 'Eat garlic, eat eggplant, grow year by year'. After returning home in the evening, the cows are sprinkled with makhiyati leaves, singing 'Makhiyati makhipat makhi maro jak-jak' and fed pitha-pana and tied with new pagha.
People Bihu or Manuh Bihu
The day after Garu Bihu, the first day of Bohag, is the day of Manuh Bihu. In the morning, everyone washes their feet and the younger ones serve the older ones and receive blessings. On the day of Manuh Bihu, everyone wears new clothes and gives each other Bihuan gifts.
Gosai Bihu
The third day of Rangali Bihu is celebrated as Gosai Bihu. On this day, God is praised and everyone is wished well for the year.
Tatar Bihu or Weaving Bihu
The fourth day of Bihu is 'Tatar Bihu' On that day, the weavers wipe their weaving tools, tie them up and get ready to plant.
Nangal Bihu
Therefore, the fifth day of Bihu is celebrated as Nangal Bihu, giving priority to agriculture.
Chenehi or Daughter Bihu
The sixth day of Bihu is celebrated as Chenehi or Jiyari Bihu. This is the day when the married daughter comes home.Hence the day is called ‘Chenehi or Daughter Bihu’.
Chera Bihu
There are many different types of Bihu, including rice with many dishes and a hundred and one kinds of vegetables.
Another specialty of Bohag Bihu is the singing of Huchari. In the first days of Bohag, people, young and old, go from house to house and sing Huchari to wish the welfare of their hosts. In some places, local people sing Huchari throughout the month.
