During the sacred months of Sawan and Bhadrapada of the Hindu calendar, devotees of Lord Shiva from across the nation gather in the holy city of Ujjain to pray and participate in the grand Mahakal Sawari. This vibrant and majestic procession of Lord Shiva takes place every Monday during Sawan and the first two Mondays of Bhadrapada. The procession tours the city, symbolising Lord Mahakal's sacred journey to oversee the well-being of his devotees.
The procession begins at the famed Mahakaleshwar Temple, with an idol of Lord Shiva at its heart. The air fills with drum beats, joyous chants, cheers, and prayers as thousands of devotees line the path, praying, showering flowers, and hoping for a glimpse of the Lord. The procession makes its way to the revered Ramghat on the banks of the Shipra River, where auspicious rituals such as 'Abhishek' and 'Puja' are conducted amidst the chanting of hymns.
The divine spectacle concludes with the return to the Mahakaleshwar Temple, leaving a trail of blessings and spiritual rejuvenation.
