BAOKHUNGRI FESTIVAL
The Baokhungri festival is the biggest festival in Bodoland Territorial Region, held annually at Baokhungri Hill near Harinaguri in Kokrajhar. The Bodos strongly believe that Baokhungri hill is the sacred dwelling of Sibrai (Lord Shiva) and some other deities as well. The Baokhungri festival is the biggest festival in Bodoland Territorial Region, held annually at Baokhungri Hill near Harinaguri in Kokrajhar. The Bodos strongly believe that Baokhungri hill is the sacred dwelling of Sibrai (Lord Shiva) and some other deities as well. On this day, Bodos perform the traditional Baokhungri hajw gakhwnai (climb the Baokhungri hill) on the auspicious day of Sankranti. This festival witnesses attractive traditional folk and cultural showcase, indigenous sports and local foods etc. The festival is organised by Bodoland Territorial Region government in association with department of Sports & Youth Welfare and Tourism department. The festival marks the celebration of Rongali Bwisagu (Rangali Bihu) testifying hill-trekking on the auspicious day of Sankranti, a day before Bwisagu (In Bodo) / Bihu (Assamese) which falls in mid-April according to the Bodo calendar. The festival is believed to be a time of adventure and festivities, and lasts for 3 days.
