The construction of the temple started in 1915. Since the
temple was constructed of stone, it was called Dagdi (stone) Wada. When the
temple construction was going on, Baba's health was deteriorating. On Tuesday,
15 October 1918, the day of Mahasamadhi, his last words were, "I am not
feeling well in the Masjid. Take me to the Dagdi Vada".Baba's celestial
mortal body was buried 36 hours after his Mahasamadhi with some personal belongings.
After the cap burial, a picture of Baba was placed on a throne at the tomb,
which remained there until the current statue was installed in 1954. The temple is looked after by the trust today,
which is involved in numerous projects of Social welfare. The Temple premises
and the village of Shirdi have numerous places associated with Sai Baba which
are visited by the pilgrims with devotion.
